Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)

A digital rectal examination, or DRE, is performed by your doctor to check for issues with organs in your lower rectum, pelvis, or lower belly.

During the exam, your doctor gently inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into your rectum to check for lumps or other abnormalities.

A DRE may likely be combined with additional tests to confirm the suspicion of prostate cancer and the potential need for a prostate biopsy.
